Masterful Nigerian Champion, Segun Toriola, ITTF's #153. Hammer drills and smashes a hole on the royal fortress, implementing a "Coup d'Etat" over former World Monarch, Belgian Star, Jean Michel Saive, ITTF's #40; in a highly contended match.

September 28 at 11:38am

Dogan Arslan great match!...thank you..

September 28 at 2:05pm

Lets see our second match. A rising young Chinese promise, Fang Bo, ITTF's #112, faces ITTF's #3, the German, Timo Boll. Fang Bo's wicked game synthesizes the Chinese game on one of its most advanced expressions. Attacker, dexterous in the short game and striking at full power at any opportunity. An extraordinary and really odd footwork adds much to the complexity of the player. Next!

World Team Cup: Patrick Baum-Quadri Aruna

2010 UAE World Team Cup Classic, Dubai, UAE, Sep 28 - Oct 1.Men's Team Quarterf...

September 29 at 12:55pm

As the match just started, Patrick Baum, ITTF's #23, argues and whines with the referee on the illegality of his service. In this case the issue is that the ball is being struck behind the servers head and body, hiding the ball from his opponent's eye; and this is no longer allowed. I find Baum's service quite questionable for a few other reasons too. We'll see him in our next round. He manages to win the match and move ahead in the Draw with a red card.

We have seen 18 players, 9 matches. We would need 7 more matches to move into 8th of finals. But I believe we have everyone we need on board to resume this PDF in 9 more matches. So let's take a shortcut and go into our next round and see how our 9 winners do on eights, quarters and semifinals. So expect Seiya Kishikawa at 7:30AM doing some serious damage and breaking all expectations. Seek out for this one Junji Nagata, Yukinobu Okazaki and Fukuda John!. No Joke.

At 7:30AM ET. Our second match within the eighths of final. Chen Qi, breaks a racquet on min 00:50, I believe in this case unintentionally, but then he looses it for real. They go to a seventh game. On minute 05:27, the referee calls on him for stopping the match when he is above at 8-9. He gets a victory through any means however.

2008 Beijing Olympic - Joao Monteiro vs Segun Toriola

October 5 at 7:19am

And here we had him again!, Our main guy in this PDF. Segun Toriola. He nails in another match; pulling an upset and advancing determined in the draw. Unlike the winner of the previous match, he behaves and remains in control throughout the entire best of seven; following an strategy that applies only to this opponent. The Umpire, Sameer Sweid seems satisfied. So Joao Monteiro and Tiago Apolonia are unfortunately out now. These Portuguese players next to a few of their folks really deserve closer attention. Some of the most advanced game there is out there.

Thursday October the 6th, 7:30AM ET. The Keystone in this "Faceoff", Dimitri Ovtcharov, makes some order with a simple 4-0, in the penultimate match we will see into the eighths of final. We might as well have a second match through the day at some point, but no promise. I'd place a Short Notice if it's bound to happen; given that it would be also our first match into the quarterfinals, and quite frankly today both are easy victories for those that I hope for. I may even post just an excerpt on one of this matches, that for sound reasons go well together.

October 6 at 7:18am

Time is precious. But timing is more precious once at the table and in the making of a PDF. Therefore it takes weeks, even many years and still nobody home. Thorough training, but only the right kind. That if your are lucky to run into the right Coach, the one that on your best day makes you see that you just can't play, and demands and exercises a ruthless self criticism. Particularities that I once thought as impossible to describe. Like a minute spider, as small as a grain of salt, clinging horizontally on a single string of a spiderweb attached only by one end to my semi open window, and propelled by the wind that blows in this morning. All this, in between the shadows projected by the tree outside in a sunny and silent day.

October 6 at 11:19am

I mentioned in our third match on Patrick Baum's "service". I will say that he is working on it. I still see that he makes contact at waist level but behind or well beyond his body in a hideous manner. I'll play it by ear but in resume the rule says that: The service starts with the ball resting freely on the open palm of the servers stationary hand. Then the ball must be projected vertically upwards so that it rises at least 6 inches after being tossed by the server and before being struck. Contact must be made behind the table line and in front of the players body. So I rarely see Patrick Baum's stationary hand. Also, his toss of the ball has often a very acute angle. So we leave it there.

Friday October the 6th, 7:30AM ET. What happens to Fang Bo?. We'll see.

(P1R4) CHEN Qi vs FANG Bo - 2011 CTTSL

October 7 at 7:19am

I made sure I was early for the match that day, but as I walked towards the stadium I noticed less and less people around at every block. Once I got there I was completely alone. It's for tomorrow! first I thought. But I looked to my ticket just to confirm that effectively I was meant to be here today. Anyway I walked to the gate, it was closed. I thought on calling you and ask, but your line was dead. A bit confused, I decided I'd walk around half a stadium and then leave crossing Glehni Park, see if I could get to the corner of Kitzbergi and Harku. And as I furthered south to reach for the path, I saw a big hole wide open on the stadium's south façade. I looked through it, inside it was dark. There was all sort of debris scattered around, somebody had jammed the outer fire escape door with the threshold of a guitar. In full perplexity now, I decided to sneak in. It was all covered in dust, seats all broken everywhere, pigeons had nested 45 feet above the central court, a dimmed ray of sunlight made it in through a punch. I saw a ragged blue raincoat on the floor and a woman's purse, I took it with me. There were some tables in pieces, some upside down, sideways and legless still laying around. One of them was actually rigged with cardboard boxes underneath and even a net. There were dust steps on the floor, as if somebody had played at some point. Then I walked into a large hallway that seemed even darker. For a fraction of a second I heard a big and extra loud applause behind me. As I turned around to look, suddenly two players were debating for a point right in front of my eyes, but I couldn't see who they were. I split up as soon as I was able, and reached out through my only entrance.

Multibola de Marcos Madrid.MPG

October 9 at 11:53pm

Playing the match could be tough, but training the right way is much tougher. You invest several hours a week; 15 or 20, in exhaustive scrutiny to endure and compete only about 35 minutes. Plus after all you didn't choose any Coach, he chooses you in the best cases. Unless you are as good as Marcos Madrid, and sometimes not even then. By the time you are in a match, you should feel weightless and have a concrete strategy. A sign from his hand may imply to move to a plan B or get closer to the table or let him use his forehand so he will open a space on his left side were you can finally counter hit. What your Coach says may show radically in the outcome of the final score, and ultimately your ranking. But even so you may loose, as we've seen every time. Of course there are easy matches and odd opponents, but you don't know me!. I don't think you would recognize me if we happen to share a table this time in a restaurant. From where I can see, this hasn't even started yet, and I am already disqualified. Let alone 1991!.

So you still think that I am looking for friendship?. Not exactly but my blog will always be open for everybody, several years after I die. Even if you come but still can't be my friend. But if you come as my enemy, I will block you and persist much harder on my point. So first, look at La Mecca and the Arab Spring. Your head might end up being more valuable than your friendship.

Marcos Madrid vs Henry Mújica

Duelo de octavos de final del Latinoamericano 2010 Cancún Quintana Roo Marcos Madrid vs Henry Mújica

October 12 at 8:02am

We sent Henry to Santos Dumont first and he never made it for his connection. We were worried for a few hours, then he called from Pedra de Guaratiba to explain: Work in progress instead of process work; He said. Always growing but unable to unfold. Way too many institutional conceptualists, proto celebrities, sophists and apolitical dudes with an average craft. Hordes of students with upsettingly retrograde musical preferences and so on.

MARCOS MADRID VS SEGUN TORIOLA 2010 FRANCE PRO B

FRANCE PRO B CAEN VS ARGENTAN

October 14 at 8:16am

Here we have them both; our two finalists. Marcos Madrid vs Dimitri Ovtcharov; disputing our Final and ninth match on the second round as promised. But, as you probably know by now; we won't see them play anytime soon. Because the match is ongoing. It started long ago, and it may take a long time to conclude. No defeat anywhere near. Maybe one day we can put aside all the gear and talk; but I don't expect it. Though, what if we have an actual match to resolve this?. If that ever happens I'd place a final score below this blog. Meanwhile most culture you'll get offered will remain inspected and legitimized within the rankings of a Bureaucratic Cultural Apparatus. As an imperfect equation that you may not agree with. So here we let go on the "PDF MEDINA-SEGUN TORIOLA". But our Final is Ongoing!, and there is nowhere safe on this match.

One question remains, as I said. What ever happened to Chen Qi?. I am not perfectly sure; that's the match I couldn't see on October the 7th. He could have lost to anyone in a round robin, or to Henry that day in a simple elimination in quarterfinals. Given that his first victory over Wang Jian, was in the 32nds of Final, that's why that match was left at last in the first round. But somebody out there saw what exactly happened to Chen Qi. I know it. ©
